Bitcoin Genesis
03 January 2009
A first block. A newspaper headline. The beginning of a different kind of money.
Origins
Bitcoin emerged from a proposal for peer-to-peer electronic cash. Instead of relying on a bank to keep the ledger, its design lets a network agree on transactions using proof of work. The genesis block is the starting point of that ledger.
The moment
On 3 January 2009, Satoshi Nakamoto mined block zero. Its coinbase contains a Times headline about a second bailout for banks. The message anchors the block in its contemporary financial context; it does not, by itself, prove every later interpretation of Nakamoto’s politics.
The aftermath
The network continued beyond its founder. Reading this block today offers a direct connection to the experiment before exchanges, token sales or NFT markets. Its significance here is foundational: every Bitcoin block traces its ancestry to this starting point.
