Bitcoin Pizza Day

22 May 2010

When 10,000 bitcoin bought two pizzas, an abstract experiment became an everyday exchange.

Origins

Early bitcoin users had software and coins, but few places to spend them. Laszlo Hanyecz used the BitcoinTalk forum to ask whether somebody would arrange pizza delivery in return for bitcoin.

The moment

On 22 May 2010, Hanyecz confirmed that the trade had worked. The forum thread preserves the offer, negotiation and confirmation. The agreed payment was 10,000 BTC for two pizzas, arranged through another participant rather than accepted directly by a restaurant.

The aftermath

The anniversary became a recurring ritual in Bitcoin culture. Later price comparisons are memorable, but the historical point is practical exchange: two people coordinated a purchase with a new payment instrument. The original conversation is more revealing than a retrospective price chart.
