The Bored Ape Yacht Club

April 2021

A collection of ape portraits made membership part of the NFT story.

Origins

NFT collections had already established ways to assign ownership to digital images. Bored Ape Yacht Club added a club framing: a token could signal membership as well as ownership of a specific portrait.

The moment

Yuga Labs launched the collection in April 2021. Its format paired a finite set of generated ape characters with a shared identity. The project became a prominent example of the profile-picture collection model.

The aftermath

The club idea expanded discussion about what NFT ownership could represent. This archive distinguishes the existence of membership branding from any promise of lasting financial value. Its relationship to CryptoPunks is a comparison of collectible formats and cultural identity.
