Uniswap: Liquidity Without an Order Book
02 November 2018
A simple automated market maker changed how tokens could be exchanged.
Origins
Hayden Adams began working on an automated market maker after encouragement from Ethereum collaborators. The project explored an alternative to exchanges built around conventional order books.
The moment
Uniswap deployed to Ethereum mainnet on 2 November 2018. Its early pools paired tokens with ether and allowed participants to provide liquidity. Adams’s retrospective describes the development process and a modest initial launch.
The aftermath
Later versions expanded the design, and Uniswap became an important piece of DeFi infrastructure. Its connection to DeFi Summer reflects an exchange mechanism used by that ecosystem. Liquidity provision also carries risks; historical influence is not evidence of a risk-free investment.
